5G NR 3D Beamforming & Beam Management
Signal processing technique that directs radio frequency signals toward specific User Equipment (UE) rather than broadcasting omnidirectionally.
Technical Explanation
Beamforming uses multi-element antenna arrays and phase manipulation to constructively combine radio signals in the direction of a target receiver and destructively cancel signals in unwanted directions. In 5G NR, 3D beamforming operates horizontally and vertically. It is fundamental in overcoming high path loss, atmospheric attenuation, and penetration loss in Sub-6 GHz and especially mmWave bands (FR2). 5G defines rigorous Beam Management procedures: Beam Sweeping (SSB), Beam Measurement (CSI-RS), Beam Reporting, Beam Recovery (Beam Failure Detection), and Beam Switching.
