A flat, sub-millimeter electromagnetic metasurface placed over smartphone antenna arrays to collimate and amplify sub-THz beams.
Technical Explanation
Due to space constraints in smartphones, conventional high-gain horn or dielectric lens antennas cannot be physically integrated. The handset metasurface lens antenna consists of an ultra-thin sub-millimeter layer of engineered sub-wavelength metallic or dielectric resonators printed on the phone's back glass or camera bump. It transforms quasi-spherical waves emitted by a compact feed array into focused high-gain planar wavefronts, yielding a 10-15 dBi gain boost without increasing smartphone thickness.
