TNGF

Trusted Non-3GPP Gateway Function

Gateway function connecting operator-managed trusted Wi-Fi networks directly to the 5G Core.

Technical Explanation

Introduced in 3GPP Rel-16, the TNGF allows trusted non-3GPP access (such as carrier-grade enterprise Wi-Fi) to connect to 5GC without requiring heavy IPsec tunneling. It relies on EAP-5G over 802.11 for direct authentication, lowering device computational load while preserving 5GC security.

Key Functions

  • Connects trusted carrier Wi-Fi directly to 5GC without full IPsec
  • Supports direct EAP-5G authentication over 802.11 radio links
  • Exposes standard N2 and N3 interfaces to AMF and UPF
Specifications
3GPP TS 23.501, TS 23.502
Interfaces
N2N3Ta
