One-Sided AI Architecture

Independent Node AI/ML Architecture (gNB or UE Only)

AI architecture where a neural network is executed independently at either the gNodeB or the UE without requiring model synchronization across the air interface.

Technical Explanation

Category 1 AI in 3GPP Rel-18 defines 'One-Sided' deployment where an AI model functions entirely inside one entity using standard 3GPP inputs and outputs. Examples include gNodeB-only AI schedulers that optimize user pairing or UE-only neural receivers that suppress interference, requiring no new over-the-air protocol changes other than standard measurement reporting.

Key Functions

  • Allows proprietary vendor optimization without interoperability dependencies
  • Executes AI algorithms internally using standard 3GPP signaling inputs
  • Requires no over-the-air model transfer or model lifecycle coordination
  • Provides immediate backward compatibility with legacy Release 15-17 devices
Specifications
3GPP TR 38.843, TS 38.300 (Rel-18)
