AI-Assisted Paging Optimization
Predictive Cell Paging Using User Mobility Intelligence
Uses deep learning in the AMF to predict exactly which base station tower a dormant phone is near, eliminating nationwide paging storms.
Technical Explanation
When a call arrives for an idle smartphone, the network traditionally broadcasts paging messages across hundreds of base stations in a Tracking Area, wasting valuable radio channel capacity. In Rel-18, the AMF queries NWDAF mobility predictions: the network pages only the 2 or 3 specific cell towers the user is statistically predicted to be near, saving massive signaling bandwidth.
Key Functions
- Predicts the specific cell tower an idle device is located near using historical mobility AI
- Reduces over-the-air paging signaling message volume by over 80%
- Prevents control channel congestion and radio resource starvation in dense urban sectors
- Accelerates call establishment and push notification delivery times
