Network Exposure Function
The secure API gateway that exposes 5G Core capabilities, events, and analytics to external 3rd-party enterprise and vertical applications.
Technical Explanation
The NEF acts as a secure border API gateway bridging internal 5G Service-Based Architecture with external applications (Application Functions - AF). It securely authenticates and authorizes external API requests, masks internal 5GC network topologies and subscriber identifiers (translating external IDs to SUPIs), and allows external apps to provision QoS rules, trigger device wakeups, request location reports, and subscribe to network event notifications.

- Secure exposure of 5GC capabilities via RESTful APIs to 3rd-party Application Functions
- Translation between external identifiers (e.g. MSISDN/URI) and internal identifiers (SUPI)
- Security masking of internal 5G Core topology and microservices
