I-UPF

Intermediate User Plane Function

User plane node inserted between gNodeB and PSA to provide localized traffic breakout or mobility bridging.

Technical Explanation

An Intermediate UPF (I-UPF) is dynamically inserted into the data path when a UE travels far from its anchor or connects to an edge network. It terminates N3 GTP-U from the gNodeB and tunnels traffic over N9 to the anchor PSA, or diverts local traffic directly via an Uplink Classifier.

Key Functions

  • Inserted dynamically into data path between gNodeB and Anchor UPF
  • Terminates N3 access tunnel and forwards traffic over N9 tunnel
  • Enables Edge Computing local breakout without relocating anchor IP
