GSCN
Global Synchronization Channel Number
Sparse frequency raster indicating potential frequency locations where a UE can find an SS/PBCH block (SSB).
Technical Explanation
Searching every channel raster frequency (5 kHz steps) across gigahertz of spectrum would deplete UE battery life. The synchronization raster defines a much sparser set of GSCN frequencies (e.g. 1.2 MHz steps in sub-3 GHz) where an SSB may be positioned, accelerating initial cell acquisition by over 90%.
Key Functions
- Restricts initial cell search to sparse, predefined synchronization frequencies
- Accelerates power-on cell search and reduces device energy consumption
- Identifies exact frequency placement of SS/PBCH block (SSB)
